Ricky’s Blog

Thank You For Blogging With Me

The purpose of this blog is to discuss current events covering a myriad of topics. I have always been a person who is interested in other people’s perspectives. In Numbers 22 of the Bible and referenced in 2 Peter, God caused a donkey to speak to a stubborn prophet. The King James version of the bible actually reads…”the dumb a– speaking in a man’s voice”… Because of that, I’ve come to the conclusion that God can use anyone or anything to speak a word to us. Therefore, I'm open to listen to anyone, although I may not believe all that is said.

I received this comment from a friend...
Ricky - I think of you guys often and need to get over there to church soon! Nothing else compares to Covenant!! Anyway - I thought you'd enjoy this quote from Mark Batterson.
"Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death. Set God-sized goals. Pursue God-ordained passions. Go after a dream that is destined to fail without divine intervention. Keep asking questions. Keep making mistakes. Keep seeking God. Stop pointing out problems and become part of the solution. Stop repeating the past and start creating the
future. Stop playing it safe and start taking risks. Expand your horizons. Accumulate experiences. Enjoy the journey. Find every excuse you can to celebrate everything you can. Live like today is the first day and last day of your life. Don’t let what’s wrong with you keep you from worshiping what’s right with God. Burn sinful bridges. Blaze new trails. Criticize by creating. Worry less about what people think and more about what God thinks. Don’t try to be who you’re not. Be yourself. Laugh at yourself. Don’t let fear dictate your decisions. Take a flying leap of faith. Chase the lion!" In a Pit with
a Lion on a Snowy Day, Mark Batterson

Prior to leaving my secular career to join the staff at my church, I worked in the insurance industry. On one occasion I had flown to El Paso to monitor a trial for one of our clients. The court house lobby was teeming with people from all walks of life. The undistinguished conversations of family members, lawyers, clients and others echoed through the chambers of the building creating a buzz that made it difficult to hear the person right next to me.
All of a sudden, I heard in the distance, the faint cry of someone down the hall. Whoever they were cried out, "Bad News". I thought to myself what happened? What's going on? Whoever they were and whatever had happened, my attention was now focused on that faint cry. I heard it again though a little louder; "Bad News!" With this second proclamation, the noise of the conversations began to quiet down. "Bad News!" the voice cried out again. By the third time, the bustling activity that permeated the halls of the courthouse had ceased and everyone present was now captivated by those words.
At that moment I spotted the purveyor of what must be some tragic event that had occurred. He was an unshavened, disheveled man, about 5'4", weighing about 160lbs and walked with a slight limp. Fully convinced that he now had the attention of the movers and shakers, the mom and pops, the vendors, the security team, he bellowed out..."BAD NEWS...GAS GOIN' UP!" It was only then that I noticed he had a bundle of newspapers tucked under his left arm; the headlines simply read "Gas Prices are Going Up!"
As I pondered this event, I wondered, "Why are people attracted to bad news so easily?" Bad news consciously or unconsciously has the potential to instil fear within us. Though we have the propensity to focus on the "bad" news, there are lots of good things happening all around us.
I made a decision a long time ago that I would not dwell on the bad news happening in my environment. I have purposed in my heart to dwell on the good happening around me. Proverbs 15:30 says, "A good report makes the bones healthy" (NKJV);"good news makes for good health"(NLT)
Do you need a lift mentally or emotionally, then began to focus on the good news that's in your circle of influence. If you look for it you will certainly find it.

The Covenant Church worship CD standing debuted at #2 on Billboard's Christian Albums. This is no surprise to me as the songs written and sung by the Covenant Church music team will lift your spirit to new heights. How I wish I could sing like David Binion, Josh Dufrene or Colin Edge; how Cyd wishes I could sing like the trio. In my heart of hearts I love to worship so I walk about the house making up songs and singing from the top of my lungs. It makes no difference to me the style, tempo or key; I truly am making a joyful noise. What may be noise to others is music to my ears and to the one to whom I am singing. Because there is always a song in my heart, there is no room for despair or depression. There is no room for grudges or unforgiveness. Songs are a gift from our Creator designed to set a mood based upon the focus of the song. Have you ever noticed that the words of a song correlates to the mood it's designed to create. Because of that, I pay close attention to words in songs. "Standing" sets the right atmosphere at the right time and whether Cyd and the boys like it or not, I'm going to make a joyful noise as I sing along with the team. Be sure to get a copy of the album for for you and your friends. God Bless

On August 5th, 2012, we were blessed to hold a Dedication and Grand Opening Celebration for our new Student Ministries facility at Covenant Church Colleyville. The rendering for the 18,000 square foot building was drafted in the spring of 2007 less than 9 months after the property was given to Covenant Church by Colleyville Christian Fellowship. The drawing included a 150 seat auditorium for teenagers, a 100 seat auditorium for the elementary students, 9 classrooms, a gym, coffee bar, gameroom and two offices. Over $3mm was invested in this project to bring the vision into reality.

Congratulations and a huge thanks goes out to our Founders and Senior Pastors, Mike and Kathy Hayes, the members of each of the Covenant Church campuses who all contributed to the project in one way or another, Lance Bernard and Wailen York of Construction Zone International, the General Contractor and the many subcontractors who worked on the project.  A heart-felt thank you to the members of Covenant Church Colleyville who gave sacrificially of their time, talent and treasure and understood and believed in what we were trying to accomplish in our local community. Your constant prayer and words of encouragement provided strength during the pressured filled days. Many thanks are also in order for those of you who were not members of Covenant yet you prayed earnestly for the project and gave financially each time an appeal was made.  The staff at Covenant Colleyville, Pastors Carter and Ann Foster, Pastors Kerry and Rochelle, Pastors Shawn and Lindsay, Della, Daniel Nash, Emily, Daniel Sirka, Andria, Teresa kept the faith and stayed positive during the construction delays and took the time to walk through the project  with me a thousand times over, even though on some days no construction progress had been made.

Words cannot express my gratitude to my sweetheart Cyd who steadied me when my faith was under attack. I could hear her crying out to the Lord before daybreak asking Him to strengthen and give me courage. Cyd you are truly a God-fearing warrior. What can I say about Seth and Caleb who are continually my comedy relief; life is full of joy for me because you two love life to its fullest and always come up with profound and funny comments at just the right time.

Finally, I give thanks to my Father in heaven, who loves me unconditionally. Father, you empowered me with your strength and when my faith failed, you didn't condemn me, you gently placed your arms around me and reminded me that this was your project and would fund it according to your plan. You told me, "I've Got This!" and I believed you. Thank you for giving me your perspective - it sustained me. I love you Lord!

I'm grateful that our heavenly Father had a plan, revealed it to us, provided the resource to thousands of people who funded the vision and brought it to completion. May many families be saved and lives changed because together we believed God and built something that will transform people for generations to come.
