Ricky’s Blog

Thank You For Blogging With Me

The purpose of this blog is to discuss current events covering a myriad of topics. I have always been a person who is interested in other people’s perspectives. In Numbers 22 of the Bible and referenced in 2 Peter, God caused a donkey to speak to a stubborn prophet. The King James version of the bible actually reads…”the dumb a– speaking in a man’s voice”… Because of that, I’ve come to the conclusion that God can use anyone or anything to speak a word to us. Therefore, I'm open to listen to anyone, although I may not believe all that is said.

My son, Seth, played tackle football for the first time last year. As I observed his team practice, I noticed something that made me think about life in general. The kids were working on tackling, one of the fundamentals of "tackle football". One kid on offense was instructed to run through one of three channels while the kid on defense was supposed to tackle the kid with the football. The kids who were timid while running with the football were leveled; the kids who were timid while trying to make the tackle were run over. This is pretty much true in life, if you're not confident in your assignment, it's going to be hard to complete it. So, where does competence come from? First, you must know what you are supposed to accomplish. This requires knowledge and understanding. The more we know and understand our assignment, the more confident we can be in fulfilling it. This leads me to the second point. Once confidence is gained, you must constantly remind yourself that you can get the job done. The more you complete your assignments, the more confidence you gain and the more successful you become. It all goes back to knowledge and understanding.Learn this lesson from pee wee football and you'll succeed at whatever you do.

America is the greatest country in the history of the world. Whether it's believed or not, we are great because of the Judeo-Christian ethic established at the founding of this nation. America has moments in its history of which none of us are proud. But, because of this ethos of justice and righteousness created in its founding, America - its people have always adjusted the moral compass and moved the country in the right direction. In many matters, we still have a long way to go. This brings me to the focal point of this blog. How are we going to make course corrections with the moral compass of our nation being eroded? Where are the real Christians? The ones who recognize that Christianity is not a religion but a relationship. The ones who believe the scriptures are God inspired writings of humble people whose lives and writings point to a Redeemer who gave His life that we might experience life to the fullest. The ones who love justice and mercy and truth. Where are the Real Christians who will stand up in the face of political correctness and tell the truth about what we are becoming as a nation. The motto on the seal of the United States is "E Pluribus Unum" - "Out of the Many - One". Whether you call yourselves Protestants or Catholics, it's time the Real Christians stand up and make yourselves known.

Observing the political process in this nation is very interesting to me. First, there is no other nation in the earth or the history of the world that would allow the various opinions espoused by people from different backgrounds, ethnicity, cultures and experiences. Secondly, though, the discourse is uncivil at times, no one is ending up in a back alley or coming up missing because of dissenting views. The third reason that I find the political process interesting is the diversity of Christian opinion that permeates the political landscape. I've wondered how someone reading the bible can come to different conclusions about who to support and vote for in a political campaign. This nation is in the most treacherous place in it's history economically and though we are in dire straits, there is a solution. That solution is found in Matthew 6:33..."seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you." The "things" referred to are all natural/physical things that require finances to obtain. Though there are many hard decisions to make and treacherous steps to take to get out of this crisis, the first action is to cry out to the All-Knowing, All-Wise God of creation.

When was the last time you went to church? What do you remember about your last experience at a church service.  Many times people have a concept of church based upon their past experiences. I have news for you, many churches are not like the churches your parents attended. Church services, in many churches are vibrant and expressive. The music is done with excellence and the exposition of scripture will give you tools to help make life work. Let me tell you about my church, called Covenant Church.

Covenant was founded by Pastors Mike and Kathy Hayes in 1976 in Carrollton, Texas.  I've been a member since 1988; it was then that I walked through the front doors of the church and I heard the Lord say to me, "This is home for you". I had given my heart to the Lord in 1981 on the university campus. Over the course of those few years in school, I was blessed to be involved in a campus ministry that transformed my life. However, our Pastor had a moral failure a few semesters before I graduated. This person had taught me about faith and salvation and how to hear God's voice. When he succumbed to temptation and didn't quickly repent, it shook my faith, not in God, but in spiritual leaders. For almost 3 years after that, I continued to go to church, but I just didn't trust those in leadership.

When I stepped through the threshold of the front doors of Covenant Church the other word that I heard from the Lord was this..." I'm going to restore your confidence and trust in ministry leaders." Over this last 22 years at Covenant, the Lord has done just that. Pastors Mike and Kathy, though not perfect, have demonstrated to me what it means to be committed to Christ and to do the right thing for the right reasons.

So, if you haven't been to church in a while, come and see what God is doing at Covenant Church. Check us out at covenantchurch.org. This ain't yo' mamma's church.
